Guidelines for successful plant propagation at Bayton Horticulture Centre.

    GUIDELINES FOR A SUCCESSFUL PROPAGATION

Propagation is a plant-based process that aims at preserving rare plants by multiplying them. There are two ways in which this can be done: sexually and asexually. Plants can be grown by planting the seed or by using methods like cutting tubers or grafting corms. In this process of propagation, several techniques are involved, such as layering, cutting, and grafting. Some are plants preserved by keeping a seed in store under the right conditions, which can take up to years of preservation. Some seeds can only be preserved for only one plant season of its kind.

    SEED PROPAGATION

This process takes place in plants that pollinate themselves. They produce sperm nuclei that pollinate the flower that will be on the same plant. It is also carried out on plants that are pollinated from one plant to another. It is inconvenient because a seed can be dried and stored for years and be planted when needed. This method frees the plants from viral attacks because the viruses are not spread through seeds. This process is commonly known as sexual propagation. Propagation as a seed technology works on the preservation of plants that are original and free from viral attacks.

    VEGETATIVE PROPAGATION

This method involves using shrubs and cuttings of a plant to plant them in the ground for growth and revival. The attachment and growth of the plant depend on its ability to produce tissues and plant parts. In some cases, this is entirely a natural process; in some, it is not. The method favours the idea of maintaining the same type of plant without creating variations as it is in seed propagation.

    LAYERING AND CUTTING

The process of layering takes place when a certain part of the plant is cut and then attached to a living plant that has a missing part. The cutlet is attached to the mother plant by wrapping it with plastic to ensure that the moisture does not escape. This is done to promote the rooting of the plant. This is ideal for small-scale horticulture centres. Sometimes, it can be hard to cut to root, and other times, it can be easy. Factors affecting this process’s success are the ability to develop tissue, plant hormones, and temperature and humidity.

    GRAFTING

In this tissue regeneration process, two different parts of a plant are joined together by bandaging. The stock extends its nutrients and hormones to the attached part to bring it to life until it becomes one plant altogether. This can be achieved under the right weather conditions and humidity. This can be done for small-scale horticulture centers that are easy to manage.

In conclusion, plant propagation is a method used to preserve special kinds of plants, such as seeds or shrubs and roots, for future use and to avoid the distinction of those plants. It is meritorious because it allows plant species to be kept safe and viral attack-free. There are plants that are asexual and the ones that are sexual. Horticulture is done using different types of equipment like grow room essentials, nutrients, growing tents and lighting accessories. These can be found in the most advanced horticulture centres like Bayton Horticulture Centre.
